Eileen Cavendish’s reputation, tarnished as it was, took a turn for the worse after Jacob Morgan had visited her. She felt the need to contact Homicide.

Unnerved as she was, she managed to sit still on one of the chairs in her flat. On the other side of the room, Wendy sat upright, conscious of the other woman’s trauma. Isaac, not so easily taken in, looked hard and long at the woman, either Joe Foster’s lover or friend. He still wasn’t sure which.

‘Why call us?’ Wendy asked. ‘After all, he didn’t touch you, or did he?’

‘I had no one else to turn to. That’s why I phoned you.’

‘No one in the area; not the Fosters?’

‘Maybe Ben, but mentally he used to undress me every time he saw me.’

‘He fancied you as well?’

‘He’s a young man. They’re all the same.’

‘You don’t mind people looking, assuming that you and Joe were involved?’

‘Of course I mind, but I needed to talk to someone about Jacob Morgan’s visit, what he said.’

‘Not the police necessarily?’

‘No. And besides, it might be nothing, but Morgan left me unnerved, not sure what to do. He wanted to buy me.’

‘In as many words?’ Isaac said.

‘That was my past when I was desperate for money, but not now. And no, he didn’t want a quick fumble, a leg over; he wanted me to go with him, to be there on call.’

‘A concubine?’

‘I’ve been to university. You can say it. He wanted a whore to have sex with him when he wanted.’

‘We’ve checked out Jacob Morgan. What makes you so certain that you understood him correctly.’

‘If a man stands close to where you’re sitting and says he’s going away and he wants you to join him, then it’s not conversation that he wants.’

‘You told us that was what Joe wanted, not that we’ve ever believed it.’

‘I may have screwed for money once, but I never did with Joe, not with anyone for a long time.’

‘If Morgan hadn’t wanted you for sex, would you have gone?’ Wendy asked.

‘There’s not much for me to do here, and the lease runs out on this place in a couple of weeks. I can’t see any of the Fosters paying for it.’

‘Terry?’

‘He wouldn’t want to talk, not with him. He’s just a lout.’

‘Financially, you’re in a dilemma, the same as in university. Easy to return to the tried and trusted once you’ve done it. No issues with morality for you; you’ve said that before.’

‘I’ve got money. I can always find another place, another job, but never another Joe.’ Eileen Cavendish raised a handkerchief to her eyes.

‘He was a friend, yet you still cry for him,’ Isaac said. ‘A woman of your age, you should have a boyfriend, a husband even, yet you pine for a man old enough to be your father.’

‘He was,’ Eileen said. ‘Now you finally understand why he and I could be nothing more than platonic.’

Wendy could see the truth in it, although Isaac remained mystified.

‘That’s not what you told us before,’ Isaac said.

‘I told you what I knew as the truth.
